Publication Policies

Funding Acknowledgement

All publications describing research work that utilized externally-funded MSG resources should include an acknowledgement of the funding source(s) of those MSG instruments and equipment. These funding source(s) are identified in all reports from MSG labs and are included on the web sites of the respective MSG labs. Funding agencies require and monitor these acknowledgements.

A complete list of all publications that describe work conducted with instruments funded by federal agencies needs to be maintained to document the need for that equipment and to help assure future grants. To this end, research advisors are asked to send copies of all publications that make use of work performed in MSG facilities to the respective MSG lab directors.

Researcher Authorship

MSG staff members often make significant intellectual contributions to the success of a research project, and recognition of these contributions is important. In such cases it is expected that such individuals will be included as a co-author of all publications arising from or making use of the results obtained by a MSG laboratory. Significant intellectual input could take a variety of forms and would include combinations of the following:

  • experimental design such as optimization or adaptation of data collection schemes;
  • interpretation or analysis of results; or
  • writing or editing significant portions of the manuscript

Research advisors should contact the respective MSG lab director, if there is a question about this policy, or about an MSG staff member's contribution to a project.

Manuscripts that contain routine data from an MSG facility or describe tasks requiring minimal MSG staff assistance may include an acknowledgement of that MSG facility or staff member at the lead author's discretion. In the aggregate, such acknowledgements serve to document the value of the MSG Laboratories to the University community. We suggest users of the labs follow the Association of Biomolecular Resource Facilities (ABRF) recommended guidelines (DOCX) for authorship on manuscripts.

Service Fees. Please note that service fees are charged to maintain and improve each of the MSG lab facilities. These service fees are not a substitute for appropriate recognition of the contributions of MSG personnel through co-authorship of publications.
